[INTERVIEW] Sachin Jose, a catholic journalist from India: When the West is going through self-destruction, it is great to see Polish people fighting against all sorts of civilizational threats
Poland is an amazing country. I have been able to get in touch with many Polish people. They love their country, their Catholic faith, and their traditions. The patriotism of the Poles is something that fascinates me. When many western nations are going through self-destruction, it is incredible to see Polish people fighting against all sorts of civilizational threats – said Sachin Jose, a catholic journalist from India, in the conversation with Radio Maryja. He underlined also that in the southern states of India there are vibrant Christian communities and they have plenty of priestly vocations.

Radio Maryja: You are an active user on social media, especially on Twitter. Your comments are mostly devoted to the Church and the protection of life at its very beginning. What is the importance of faith in your life?
Sachin Jose: The most important thing in my life is my faith. I have always been proud to be a member of the Catholic Church. Our Church has a glorious history. We belong to the Church of great theologians like Thomas Aquinas, great artists like Michelangelo, great storytellers like J.R.R Tolkien, great warriors like John Sobieski, and great scientists like Mendel. Therefore, I consider it a responsibility to share the beauty of our faith with others. And for that social media is an effective platform.

The Catholic Church has always had a strong voice against abortion. According to reports, since the US Supreme Court’s Roe vs Wade ruling, more than 60,000,000 babies have been murdered in their mothers’ wombs in the United States alone. Cardinal Robert Sarah referred to abortion as “the greatest tragedy of our time”. So, it is the responsibility of every Catholic to oppose abortion.

Were you raised as a Catholic or, perhaps, you discovered your faith later in your life?
I was born into a Catholic family in South India. The faith of my parents has been a big inspiration. It was in my high school that I started reading deeply about the faith. Reading Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis was a big turning point. Also, books by Scott Hahn, Cardinal Robert Sarah, and Archbishop Charles Chaput have influenced me.
There is a perception that followers of Christ in India are not welcome. Is this statement true? What is the situation of Christians in your country?
There are some problems in India, especially in the northern parts of the country. In most of the southern Indian states, the situation is different. There is a vibrant Catholic community in my state. And we have plenty of priestly vocations.

Have you not been afraid of any kind of repression or rejection due to your open admission to the Catholic Church?
I don’t care if anyone speaks ill of me because of my convictions. And I believe that faith is not something that we need to hide from the public. According to Archbishop Chaput, „To ask a Catholic to keep his faith private in the public square is like asking a married man to act single in public”. I know that I am not a perfect human being, but I am always ready to openly share my faith with others.
On Twitter, you repeatedly quote St. John Paul II and you have also introduced such figures as Blessed Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński and Blessed Father Jerzy Popiełuszko. You also seem to have a good opinion of Poland and Poles. What is it that fascinates you by our fatherland?
Poland is an amazing country. I have been able to get in touch with many Polish people. The Polish people love their country, their Catholic faith, and their traditions. The patriotism of the Polish people is something that fascinates me. When many western nations are going through self-destruction, it is incredible to see Polish people fighting against all sorts of civilizational threats. You have some brave Catholic leaders like Krakow Archbishop Marek Jędraszewski. The archbishop has strongly spoken out against abortion and gender ideologies. Pope John Paul II, the Polish Pope who fought and destroyed Soviet Communism was probably the one to have influenced him the most. I have read somewhere that both of them were close friends.
I also have great admiration for Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński. He bravely carried out his pastoral ministry in the country during Communist persecution.
Another Polish hero whom I admire is Jerzy Popiełuszko. The suffering endured by Fr Jerzy under Communist rule is unimaginable. Recently a person sent me a relic of Fr Jerzy.
50 years ago it was on this day that Polish priest Fr Jerezy Popiełuszko, who was martyred by the Communists, received his ordination. When he was an altar boy he used to walk 5 kilometers everyday through the forest in the morning to serve at the Mass. pic.twitter.com/NeVHZaX0ag

Poland is a country that has been blessed with many Catholic heroes. Let me remind you of the words of Cardinal Robert Sarah: „Poland must be a guardian of Europe, to warn Europe of the dangers resulting from the silent apostasy”.
"Why does the West want to annihilate what it built in the first place? The real enemy of the West is the West itself, its imperviousness to God and to spiritual values, which resembles a process of lethal self-destruction."

What else makes you interested in Poland? Do you plan to visit it?
Another thing that fascinates me about Poland is its generosity. The generosity of the nation was evident when it opened its border to people who were fleeing the Russia-Ukraine war. Thanks to Poland for taking in thousands of Ukrainian refugees.
I would also like to mention one more thing. The Catholic men’s Rosary rally, which was started in Poland has been spreading like wildfire to other western nations. It is great to see Polish men contributing their part to the re-evangelization of the West!

I’d love to visit Poland if I get an opportunity in the future.
